Poetry Manuscript Consultation

It's thrilling to help shape individual collections as they prepare to meet their readers. From first books to Selected Poems, my goal is to help any volume of poetry find the essential range and power of its voice. A basic consultation includes:

  • Preliminary conversation about goals
  • Line edits
  • Help with organization, order and pacing of the manuscript
  • Written comments with feedback
  • A one-hour meeting about revisions and practical next steps

Poetry Workshop Facilitator

Having taught students of all ages—from undergraduates at universities, as well as older adults at senior centers—I believe poetry workshops can be facilitated in any community setting to emphasize individual growth, artistry and group camaraderie. A basic 8- to 10-session workshop includes:

  • Readings of inspiring poems to launch in-class exercises
  • Inventive writing prompts exploring emotional and technical elements that build great poems (figurative language, lineation, voice, form, etc.)
  • Group critique with mutuality and respect

Sequential class syllabi are also available for weekend-long eco-poetry/poetry-walking workshops.

Mentoring and Coaching

One-on-one mentoring is available for writers who are developing work. Hourly sessions may include: critique of work-in-development; coaching on steps to publication.

From a small collection of books in a spare room in a high school, Lee turned Poets House into one, if not the major, location for poetry in the United States.

She took the vision of Stanley Kunitz and Elizabeth Kray (among others) and not only built a ‘house,’ she constructed a viable community. Having sat briefly where she sat as Poets House moves into its next phase has only deepened my admiration for her skill, her wise tenacity and leadership.
